Marc E. Hankin
About
Marc E. Hankin, Esq. brings more than 37 years of experience advising business owners, inventors, and managers on how best to protect valuable technology and creative works. As a Registered Patent Attorney and Founding Partner of Hankin Patent Law, APC, Marc counsels clients on patent preparation, prosecution, and licensing, as well as trademark and copyright registration, licensing, and enforcement. A former partner at several major national law firms, Marc launched Hankin Patent Law more than 20 years ago to deliver big-firm quality representation with the responsiveness and efficiency of a boutique practice.
Marc Hankin has a broad science and technical background and has been extensively involved in all aspects of intellectual property licensing, litigation, and dispute resolution. He serves as first-chair trial counsel in patent, trademark, and copyright infringement matters, and handles trade secret theft, unfair competition, domain name disputes, and related business litigation. Over the course of his career, Marc has litigated more than 650 intellectual property matters for domestic and foreign clients ranging from solo inventors and startups to Fortune 500 companies, as well as colleges and universities. He has testified more than two dozen times as a retained Expert Witness and has also served as a Mediator and as a Special Assistant Attorney General in patent infringement matters.
Marc frequently ranks among the most highly regarded intellectual property attorneys regionally, nationally, and internationally. From 2007 through 2026, he has been selected annually as a Southern California Super Lawyer®, placing him in the top 5% of intellectual property attorneys as rated by peers and competitors. He has been ranked in the Top 1% of Trademark Attorneys in the United States and the Top 1.6% of Patent Litigation Attorneys nationwide by Patexia, and has been recognized by Chambers Spotlight among the top IP attorneys worldwide. Marc has also received multiple honors as Patent Law Expert of the Year and IP Litigation and Copyright Infringements Expert of the Year from GlobalLaw Experts, Corporate INTL Magazine, and Leaders in Law.
Marc spent more than nine years representing several International Bar Associations as the only U.S. Patent Attorney involved from start to finish in negotiations at The Hague Conference on Private International Law. That work resulted in a new international treaty governing choice of court agreements for international litigation, including intellectual property disputes.
After law school, Marc clerked for the Honorable Charles L. Brieant, Jr., then Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the State Bars of California and New Jersey, numerous federal district courts, and multiple federal appellate courts across the United States.
